Public Statement by Dr. Faisal Al‑Mutairi
President, International Diplomatic Union (IDU)

On the Occasion of the International Day of Zero Waste 30 March

Today, the International Diplomatic Union joins the global community in observing the International Day of Zero Waste, a day dedicated to advancing sustainable waste management and strengthening our collective responsibility to protect the planet. This observance underscores the urgent need to reduce waste, promote responsible consumption, and safeguard the natural environment for present and future generations.

Waste pollution continues to threaten ecosystems, public health, and the stability of communities worldwide. The impact on land, water, and air is profound, affecting biodiversity, food security, and the well‑being of millions. As we mark this day, we are reminded that sustainable waste management is not merely an environmental concern—it is a development priority and a moral obligation.

The Zero Waste approach encourages individuals, communities, and governments to adopt practices that minimize waste generation, promote reuse and recycling, and support circular‑economy principles. Simple changes—such as reducing plastic use, improving household waste management, and strengthening community‑based recycling—can collectively create transformative environmental benefits.

In alignment with its mandate, the International Diplomatic Union remains committed to supporting initiatives that promote environmental sustainability, education, responsible governance, and international cooperation. Through our programmes, partnerships, and advocacy efforts, we continue to encourage policies and actions that reduce pollution, preserve natural resources, and foster a culture of environmental stewardship.

Around the world, activities marking this day—including awareness campaigns, educational workshops, recycling initiatives, and community clean‑up efforts—demonstrate the power of collective action. These initiatives highlight the essential role of individuals, institutions, and governments in building cleaner, healthier, and more resilient societies.

As we commemorate this important day, the IDU calls upon all stakeholders—governments, civil society, youth networks, and international organizations—to intensify efforts to reduce waste and promote sustainable practices. By embracing a Zero Waste mindset, we honour our responsibility to protect the environment and contribute to a more sustainable, equitable, and peaceful world.

Public Statement by Eng. Sadham Dhikran Zarjahan
Chief Operating Officer, International Diplomatic Union (IDU)

On the Occasion of the International Day of Zero Waste 30 March

Today, the International Diplomatic Union joins the global community in marking the International Day of Zero Waste, a day dedicated to advancing sustainable waste management, protecting our environment, and safeguarding the well‑being of future generations. This observance highlights the urgent need to rethink how we produce, consume, and dispose of materials, and to embrace practices that reduce pollution and preserve our planet’s natural resources.

As someone who has worked across development, youth leadership, and international cooperation—including through my service with UNIDO, the Commonwealth Youth Council, and the International Youth Council—I have witnessed firsthand how environmental degradation disproportionately affects vulnerable communities. Waste mismanagement is not merely an environmental issue; it is a development challenge that impacts public health, economic opportunity, and social stability.

The Zero Waste approach offers a transformative pathway toward sustainability. It encourages individuals, institutions, and governments to adopt responsible practices such as reducing plastic use, promoting recycling, and integrating circular‑economy principles into daily life. These actions—whether taken in homes, schools, businesses, or local communities—collectively contribute to cleaner environments and more resilient societies.

In alignment with its mandate, the International Diplomatic Union remains committed to supporting initiatives that promote education, sustainable development, environmental stewardship, and global cooperation. Through our programmes, partnerships, and youth‑focused engagements, we continue to advocate for policies and practices that reduce waste, protect ecosystems, and empower communities to take meaningful action.

Activities held around the world today—including awareness campaigns, educational workshops, recycling drives, and community clean‑ups—demonstrate the power of collective responsibility. They remind us that every individual and institution has a role to play in shaping a cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable future.

As we commemorate this important day, the IDU calls upon governments, civil society, youth networks, and international organizations to intensify efforts to reduce waste and promote environmentally responsible behaviour. By embracing a Zero Waste mindset, we honour our duty to protect the planet and ensure that future generations inherit a world defined not by pollution, but by sustainability, dignity, and shared prosperity.
