Public Statement by Dr. Faisal Al‑Mutairi
President, International Diplomatic Union (IDU)

On the Occasion of the International Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Slavery and the Transatlantic Slave Trade 25 March

Today, the International Diplomatic Union joins the international community in solemnly observing the International Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Slavery and the Transatlantic Slave Trade. This day honours the memory of the millions of men, women, and children who endured unimaginable suffering under one of the gravest injustices in human history. Established by the United Nations in 2007, this observance calls upon all nations to reflect on the enduring legacy of slavery and to reaffirm our shared commitment to justice, equality, and human dignity.

The transatlantic slave trade inflicted profound human, cultural, and social devastation—its consequences continue to shape societies and communities across generations. As we commemorate this day, we acknowledge the resilience, strength, and humanity of the victims, whose stories must never be forgotten. Their experiences remind us of the urgent need to confront racism, discrimination, and all forms of exploitation that persist in the modern world.

This day also underscores the importance of education as a powerful tool for transformation. By teaching future generations about the history of slavery and its lasting impact, we foster understanding, encourage critical reflection, and build the foundations for a more just and inclusive global society. Dialogue across cultures and communities remains essential to healing historical wounds and promoting mutual respect.

In alignment with its mandate, the International Diplomatic Union remains committed to advancing human rights, intercultural dialogue, social justice, and equality. Through our educational programmes, cultural initiatives, and partnerships with regional and international organizations, we continue to support efforts that challenge discrimination and promote a deeper understanding of shared history.

Around the world, commemorative events—including seminars, exhibitions, workshops, and artistic presentations—serve as powerful reminders of the lives lost and the enduring struggle for freedom and dignity. These initiatives reinforce the international community’s responsibility to combat all forms of modern slavery, human trafficking, and exploitation, ensuring that such atrocities are never repeated.

As we mark this solemn day, the IDU reaffirms its unwavering commitment to honouring the victims of slavery and the transatlantic slave trade. We stand with all communities affected by this painful legacy and pledge to continue working toward a world grounded in equality, justice, and respect for the inherent dignity of every human being.
