On the Occasion of the International Day of Sport for Development and Peace (A/RES/67/296)

Today, the International Diplomatic Union joins the global community in celebrating the International Day of Sport for Development and Peace, established by the United Nations to highlight the vital role of sport in promoting sustainable development, fostering peace, and reinforcing shared human values across societies. This day serves as an opportunity to recognize sport’s power to build bridges between individuals, enhance mutual understanding, and empower youth and marginalized communities.
Sport is not merely a physical activity; it is a means to achieve social change, strengthen community cohesion, and instill values of respect, cooperation, and fairness. This day reminds us that investing in sport contributes to more inclusive societies and enhances the capacity to address social, cultural, and economic challenges.
We honor athletes, coaches, and community organizations who dedicate themselves to promoting development and peace through sport, who face challenges with determination and perseverance, and who continue to create lasting positive impacts within their communities. Their commitment inspires the international community to advance initiatives that link sport with human values and sustainable development goals.
In line with its mandate, the International Diplomatic Union remains committed to supporting programs and initiatives that promote peace and development through sport, including educational programs, partnerships with regional and international institutions, and community-driven initiatives focused on inclusion, equality, and youth empowerment.
Around the world, activities marking this day—including conferences, workshops, awareness campaigns, and community dialogues—highlight the central role of sport in advancing development and peace, while also supporting professionals and organizations that document initiatives and contribute to achieving long-term social objectives.
On this occasion, the IDU calls upon governments, international organizations, and civil society to reaffirm their commitment to peace, development, youth empowerment, and social justice through sport. Only through collaborative effort and dedicated action can we lay the foundation for a more peaceful and prosperous future for all.
