Public Statement by Dr. Faisal Al‑Mutairi
President, International Diplomatic Union (IDU)

On the Occasion of the International Day for the Right to the Truth concerning Gross Human Rights Violations and for the Dignity of Victims 24 March

Today, the International Diplomatic Union joins the global community in observing the International Day for the Right to the Truth concerning Gross Human Rights Violations and for the Dignity of Victims. Established by the United Nations in 2010, this day reaffirms a fundamental principle: that every victim, every family, and every society has the right to know the truth about serious human rights violations, and that truth is indispensable to justice, accountability, and reconciliation.

The right to the truth is not merely a legal concept—it is a moral imperative. It ensures that the suffering of victims is neither forgotten nor denied, and that their dignity is upheld through transparency, investigation, and the pursuit of justice. This day reminds us that impunity erodes the foundations of peace, while truth‑seeking strengthens the rule of law and protects communities from the recurrence of future violations.

We honour the courage of victims and their families, who continue to seek answers in the face of silence, denial, or obstruction. Their resilience inspires the international community to uphold its responsibility to investigate violations, hold perpetrators accountable, and ensure that justice is not delayed or denied.

In alignment with its mandate, the International Diplomatic Union remains committed to advancing human rights, accountability, and the dignity of all individuals affected by conflict, repression, or injustice. Through our educational programmes, diplomatic initiatives, and partnerships with regional and international institutions, we support efforts that promote transparency, strengthen legal protections, and foster reconciliation within and among nations.

Around the world, activities marking this day—including conferences, workshops, dialogue sessions, and awareness campaigns—highlight the legal and institutional mechanisms that safeguard victims’ rights. These initiatives also underscore the importance of supporting organizations and professionals who work tirelessly to document violations, preserve evidence, and advocate for justice.

As we commemorate this solemn day, the IDU calls upon governments, international organizations, and civil society to reaffirm their commitment to truth, justice, and human dignity. Only by confronting past violations with honesty and accountability can societies build a future grounded in trust, respect, and the shared values of humanity.
