Public Statement by Dr. Faisal Al‑Mutairi
President, International Diplomatic Union (IDU)
On the Occasion of the International Day of Solidarity with Detained and Missing Staff Members
25 March
Today, the International Diplomatic Union stands in solemn solidarity with the United Nations and the global humanitarian community in marking the International Day of Solidarity with Detained and Missing Staff Members. This day serves as a powerful reminder of the profound risks faced by humanitarian, diplomatic, and development personnel who work tirelessly—often in the most challenging environments—to advance peace, protect human rights, and deliver life‑saving assistance.
Across the world, staff members continue to be detained, abducted, or forcibly disappeared while carrying out their duties. Their courage reflects the highest ideals of international service, yet their vulnerability underscores the urgent need for stronger global mechanisms to ensure their safety and uphold their rights. The observance of this day reaffirms that the protection of humanitarian and diplomatic personnel is not optional—it is a legal and moral obligation grounded in international law and fundamental human dignity.
We also recognize the families of detained and missing staff members, who endure profound uncertainty and hardship. Their resilience inspires the international community to intensify efforts to secure the safe release of their loved ones and to ensure that no case is forgotten. Their struggle is a shared responsibility, and their voices must remain at the forefront of global advocacy.
In alignment with its mandate, the International Diplomatic Union remains committed to supporting initiatives that promote human rights, international cooperation, and the safety of all personnel serving in humanitarian and diplomatic missions. Through our programmes, partnerships, and educational efforts, we continue to advocate for stronger protection frameworks, accountability mechanisms, and respect for international conventions that safeguard those who serve on the front lines of global peace and development.
Activities held around the world today—including conferences, panel discussions, awareness campaigns, and official statements—highlight ongoing cases and call for renewed commitment to ensuring the safety of staff members everywhere. These efforts remind us that protecting those who serve humanity is essential to preserving the integrity and effectiveness of international action.
As we observe this important day, the IDU reaffirms its unwavering solidarity with all detained and missing staff members and its commitment to advocating for their safe return. We honour their service, stand with their families, and call upon all governments and institutions to uphold their obligations to protect those who dedicate their lives to advancing peace, justice, and human dignity.
